Reserves naturals de Pi i de Mentet
National nature reserves (1984)South of Canigó, two neighbouring nature reserves protect nearly 7,000 hectares of mountain, from 950 to 2,700 metres: forests, summer pastures, izard and bearded vultures, around Mantet, long nicknamed the "last village in France".

In the heart of the Conflent, between the Canigó massif and the Spanish border, the national nature reserves of Py and Mantet were created on the same day, 17 September 1984. Together, they cover nearly 7,000 hectares of high mountain, from wooded valley floors at around 950 metres up to ridges of almost 2,700 metres, around the Pic de la Dona.
At Mantet, three parallel valleys run down towards the north: their shaded slopes are covered in forest, their sunlit slopes in broom heath and summer pastures where flocks graze. The mountain pine climbs to 2,400 metres on the ridges. At Py, the larger reserve rises through four vegetation zones, from the hills to the alpine grasslands, over a variety of rocks: granite, gneiss, mica schists and marbles.
The village of Mantet, at the end of a dead-end road, was long one of the most isolated in France: the road only arrived in the 1960s and electricity not until 1983. It was nicknamed the “last village in France”. Today it has only a few dozen inhabitants.
The two reserves are refuges for mountain wildlife: the izard, the golden eagle, the bearded vulture and the griffon vulture are easily seen, while the Pyrenean desman, the capercaillie and the ptarmigan remain elusive. They are managed by the Fédération des réserves naturelles catalanes together with the communes, and more than 5,000 species have been recorded in each.

Wildlife, plants and landscapes
Wooded north-facing slopes, open south-facing slopes
At Mantet, the shaded slopes are covered in forest, the sunlit slopes in broom heath and summer pastures.
The mountain pine
It climbs to 2,400 metres on the ridges, at the upper limit of the forest.
A Pyrenean flora
Burser's gentian, Pyrenean yarrow and Vandelli's rock-jasmine are among the reserves' remarkable plants.
The Apollo butterfly
This large white butterfly spotted with red, protected in France, lives in the Py reserve.
The great birds of prey
Bearded vultures, golden eagles and griffon vultures soar above the ridges.
The last village in France
Mantet only received electricity in 1983; at the end of a dead-end road, it was one of the most isolated villages in the country.
When to go
The reserves are best explored from June to October, when the snow has melted on the heights. The Maison de la nature de Mantet is open every day in summer and by appointment for the rest of the year. In the reserves, dogs are prohibited, even on a lead; fires, camping, picking and vehicles are regulated.
Getting there
From Villefranche-de-Conflent, drive up to Sahorre and then Py, and continue along the Col de Mantet road (D6), narrow and steep after Py, to the village of Mantet, where it ends. A liO bus line serves Py from Prades. The GR 10 crosses both reserves: the stage from Mantet to Py is one of the finest in the Conflent.
